Thiscouldhavedegeneratedintonothingmorethanjustanotherteenrevengecomedy,butthere'ssomuchmore:thedialogueislacedwithsharpwit;therearesomelovelyscenesthathavenothingtodowiththestoryyetarecarefullysetup,almostasblackouts(e.g.,Mitchgoestoalectureatwhichafewstudentshavelefttaperecordersinsteadofattending;later,atanotherlecturetherearemoretaperecordersthanstudents;and,inafinalscene,onelargetaperecordergivesthelecturetoaroompopulatedbynothingbutothersmallrecorders!);andthrow-awayscenesthatmakeyouwanttostopandbackupthetape(e.g.,Chrisoff-handedlycuttingasliceoffabarofsolidnitrogentomakeaslugforthecoffeemachine).
It'salsooneofthefewmoviestoboastthepresenceofthememorableMichelleMeyerink--asJordan,the"girl-nerd"whomadebeingsmartandfemalesomethingtobeemulated.Andthere'sTearsforFearsgreatsong,"EverybodyWantstoRuletheWorld"providingtheperfectcodaastheclosingcreditsbegintoroll....Yes:reallynow,what'stheretobeembarrassedabout?
